Geotechnical Engineer E.I.T.(Austin/Round Rock, TX)

Education/Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years’ geotechnical related experience preferred.
  • Geotechnical experience in municipal and transportation projects in the Austin/Round Rock Metro Area preferred.
  • Texas Professional Engineer (PE) registration or ability to obtain a PE license within two years of employment preferred.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Complete understanding of field and laboratory testing.
  • Familiarity with local construction standards and requirements.
  • Ability to lead and be part of a project team.
  • Project management and marketing skills are desired.
  • 25% to 40% of travel to project sites in Texas and New Mexico.

Geotechnical Driller (Texas)

Job Description

The Driller will be responsible for moving, set up and operation drilling rigs and related equipment to drill holes for geotechnical exploration test boring. Site investigation/geotechnical drilling is done to determine the soil characteristics on construction sites.

Job Responsibilities

  • Mobilization and demobilization of drill rig trucks for jobs as directed.
  • Daily field and yard operations of rig, i.e. handling drill pipe, mixing drill mud and use of other related equipment.
  • Perform various techniques of drilling including auger drilling, mud rotary, air rotary, carbide bit coring, and diamond bit coring.
  • Perform various types of soil and rock sampling including standard penetration test, Texas cone penetration, and Shelby tubes.
  • Install groundwater monitoring well, piezometers, and inclinometers.
  • Able to locate boring using a handheld GPS unit or a GPS phone application.
  • Observe and follow all company safety rules and procedures.
  • Program future field equipment and supply needs weekly, monthly, and quarterly
  • Direct helper in drilling under various conditions and to obtain soil and rock samples; performs other duties as assigned.
  • Direct and/or assist the Helper in performing general maintenance of the drilling rig and its associated equipment to ensure safe operational conditions.
  • Meet all utilization goals as determined by Project Engineer and/or Supervisor.
  • Perform shop/yard duties as assigned.
  • Assure that all drilling functions, including QA/QC are performed in accordance with ASTM drilling methods, project scope and other contract specifications.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 2 or more years of related experience.
  • Familiar with DOT and IFTA regulations.
  • Able to travel extensively.
  • Good mechanical and technical aptitude.
  • Experienced and knowledgeable with various types of techniques, i.e., rock coring, air & mud rotary, standard soil sampling & HWT casing advancer.
  • Preferred experience with monitor well & inclinometer installations, packer testing, pressure meter testing.
  • Good communication skills, including verbal, written and basic math skills.
  • Preferred but not required, Texas Monitor Well license
  • Possess a valid CDL driver’s license, with an acceptable motor vehicle record

Job Description

The Driller Helper will assist in mobilization/demobilization of drill rig and/or cone trucks for jobs, as directed. Assist driller in daily field/yard operations of rig. i.e. handling drill pipe, mixing drill mud and use of other equipment.

Job Responsibilities

With much supervision and little decision-making:

  • Observe and follow all company safety rules and procedures.
  • Support and encourage continuous improvement of the company’s processes, including safety program and quality management system.

  • Physical requirements include standing, squatting and heavy lifting over long periods during workday.

Geotechnical Laboratory Engineer-in-Training EIT (Austin/Round Rock, TX)

This is an entry-level position to the engineer practice performing soil sample testing under the direction of senior engineering and project management staff and develop solutions, make recommendations, and make engineering calculations, specifications and reports for review.

Responsibilities: 

  • Perform various field and laboratory tests on soil materials under the direction of Senior Engineering and Project Management staff
  • Prepare various levels of reporting responsibilities
  • Review observation and test data for accuracy and completeness
  • Work with project engineers and clients to ensure that client specifications are followed
  • Make engineering calculations, specifications and reports using standard formulas and computer software
  • Coordinate project assignments with those of other engineers and technicians within the discipline group
  • Work independently on specific assignments of limited scope and with engineers and paraprofessionals on larger projects as a team member
  • Assist with training and development of soil laboratory technical staff

Required Skills:

  • Ability to review lab results and use advanced functions of MS Excel to check and verify testing results

Essential Responsibilities

  • Perform fieldwork for geotechnical subsurface investigation programs and geophysical surveys under specific work instructions as provided by the engineering staff.
  • The fieldwork will include geotechnical drilling and sampling, visual field reconnaissance, and soil and rock logging. Additionally, geophysical surveys will consist of performing seismic surveys, earth electrical resistivity surveys, and other appropriate surveys as directed by a project geophysicist.
  • Observation and documentation of geotechnical construction activities and perform construction material testing/inspection during construction phases.
  • Perform other engineering activities as required.

Job Requirements

  • BS or Associate degree in Civil Engineering, Geology, and Geophysics preferred. High school diploma required.
  • Willing to travel and work in various site conditions and project locations throughout the United States.
  • Proficiency with MS Office computer programs.
  • Previous experience in outdoor/field working/driving conditions is preferred.
  • Previous experience in Geotechnical drilling/sampling and construction material testing in soil and concrete is preferred.
  • Willing to relocate to Beyond’s Round Rock, TX Office.
